Tangy Chilli Sauce

Tangy Chili Sauce

Did you ever impulsively buy something in the grocery store you thought was way overpriced, but looked too good not to try? And then fell in love with it? This recipe was born out of that impulse, and the consequence. After a dozen more purchases it was clear that the budget would benefit from a homemade reverse engineering of this little gem. It took a few tries, but I ended up with a recipe that can stand up to the original. Now we can enjoy this tangy-spicy spread any time we crave it, without breaking the bank.

The flavour medley in this sauce is tricky to describe with words. There really is a lot going on in there. Think of an orchestra at the very climax of a symphony. All the instruments are playing with intensity but they still blend together in harmony. That’s what the tang, heat, sweetness, acidity, and smokiness are doing in this. Every note is loud, but complimenting the rest. “Tangy chilli sauce” may be a slight understatement.

How it's made

1 tbsp olive oil

Heat olive oil over medium heat. Once hot, add onion and sauté for 5 minutes until translucent. Add garlic and chillies and cook for another 2 minutes.

1 medium onion, diced

3 cloves of garlic, minced

1-4 red thai chillies, sliced (optional)

¼ cup nutritional yeast

Add all other ingredients to the onion-garlic-chilli mixture and cook for another 2 minutes. Remove from heat and let cool for 5 minutes. Place the mixture into the food processor and process on high for about 2 minutes.
